DUTIES

  • Worked within a highly motivated, interdisciplinary team of statisticians, GIS analysts, and emergency response officials to provide a wide range of spatial statistics related to public safety, health and structure fire risk throughout the city of Calgary.
  • Provide the Strategic Services branch of the Calgary Fire Department with GIS analysis and risk modeling for the 2007 Standards of Response Coverage (SORC).
  • Utilize ESRI’s ArcInfo, Microstation, FME and other GIS software to provide spatial analysis, cartographic products, and demographic analysis in support of City of Calgary services.

PROJECTS

  • Cumulative Effects Model for Risk Identification – Provided GIS modelling for a project seeking to determine where 450 million dollars of public fire infrastructure funds should be allocated within the recently expanded city limits of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  I utilized ESRI Model builder 9.1, Excel & Access to integrate three years of geocoded 911 point data into the city’s parcel based ownership data.  This 911 data became part of an overall cumulative effects model that I created which included; fire department response time, city-wide fire infrastructure data, and other spatial based risk factors such as building height. Model builder was used to apply numeric risk factors to the 307,000 individual property parcels within the city of Calgary(E).  Risk was determined through extensive consultation with the highly motivated, interdisciplinary team of statisticians, GIS analysts, emergency response officials and project managers at the Strategic Services Branch - Calgary FD.
  • Emergency Services Mapping – On short notice, myself and two other members of a GIS team were charged with providing 1:6,000 scale, multi-themed maps for the Calgary Police Department, and Emergency Services Division during their efforts to manage strikes, civic protests, and flood events.
